The Wildcats girls, led by Emily Mizner and Lauren Heinlein who both fired a 72, won its fifth straight team title Wednesday afternoon at Eagle Ridge Golf Club. The 18-hole event, hosted by Belleview High, acts as the MCIAC tournament.

The Wildcats' Riley Jones (74) and Stephanie Pick (77) also had good days on the greens. Lake Weir's Bridget Rempe shot an 82 to finish fifth individually.

Mizner defeated Heinlein after two playoff holes to win the MCIAC individual title.

The Forest girls finished with a 295.

“My strengths were definitely driving, I felt like I had an advantage at this course because it was a shorter course,” Mizner said. “I had some short approach shots which produced me some birdie opportunities.”

The Forest boys won its fourth straight team title and sixth over the past seven seasons. The Wildcats' Miles Albright and Seth Wright both fired a 70 after regulation with Albright winning after one playoff hole to take the individual title.

The Forest boys had a 291.

“I was hitting it good, I could have made a couple more putts but it went really good overall,” Albright said.

Vanguard's Sammy Hudson fired a 71 to take third place while Lake Weir's Hunter Whitehead (72) and Forest's Thomas Regan (74) rounded out the top-five boys finishers.

West Port's Corey Haught, who won the individual title last year, finished seventh with a 77.

Teams will now spend the next couple weeks preparing for district tournaments, which begin Oct. 13.

Thomas Regan, a rising freshman at Forest High School, finished 34th overall in the Optimist International Junior Golf Championships at PGA National Resort & Spa in Palm Beach Gardens on Sunday.

Regan was tied for 11th after two days after shooting rounds of 77 and 71 to sit at 4-under-par. On the final day, an 82 sent the golfer down the leaderboard a bit. The tournament had well over 100 golfers, and Regan was the second lowest-scoring Floridian in the field.

West Orange, record low 69!

  •  Great round today Thomas!

Kern & Stone Victorious at West Orange

Chris Kern, of Tampa fired a final round 67 to capture the Boys Division and his first FJT Victory, while Latanna Stone goes wire to wire in the Girls Division.

The Florida Junior Tour made its way over to Winter Garden this weekend to West Orange Country Club. The thirty-six hole individual stroke-play event was conducted under next to perfect weather conditions. Juniors had a good test of skill throughout the two-day event by competing on a challenging course layout and tough greens. The Florida State Golf Association would like to thank West Orange Country Club for once again hosting us, as they are always such a pleasure to work with.

In the Boys 13-15 Division, Brandon Mancheno  of Jacksonville continued his exceptional play and opened with a five-under-par 66 to take a three stroke lead over Joseph Pagdin, of Orlando and Thomas Regan, of Ocala. “Go low” was the motto for the Boys Division on Sunday, seeing numerous red numbers posted on the board. The result; a four-way tie for third place: Patrick Wu, of Winter Garden (70-72), Dhruv Patel, of Valrico (74-68), Manuel Girona, of Windermere (76-66), and first round leader Mancheno (66-76) all finishing at even par, 142.  Wocheng (Aden) Ye of Lake Mary, recorded an even par 71 for his final round to post a two-under-par 140 for the event, taking second place honors. Sitting six shots back of Mancheno after round one was Chris Kern, of Tampa, who kept focus on a low final round to make a run on the final day. Recording five birdies, including one on the challenging par 4, 18th, in his final round, Kern rounded out the tournament shooting a 72-67—139 to take first place honors for the weekend, as well as his first ever FJT victory.

In the Girls 13-15 Division, Latanna Stone of Valrico posted a one-under-par 70 for her opening round, with only a one shot lead over Jennifer Zhou of Longwood. It looked to be a close race between the two on Sunday. Zhou came out strong with two birdies on her opening nine, sitting even with Stone at the turn after Stone was only able to record one birdie on the 330 yard, par-4, No. 12. Determined, Stone had other plans. Recording three birdies and one bogey on her back nine, and with Zhou shooting even par, Stone came out victorious posting a three-under-par 68 for her final round to win by two. Sophie Membrino of Ponte Vedra Beach played exceptionally all weekend, earning her third place honors for the Girls Division at 72-74—146. Latanna earned her first Florida Junior Tour win of 2015, but this was the 10th overall FJT win for the 13 year old who has been playing on the tour since she was 8.

The next Florida Junior Tour 13-15 Division event will be held at Timacuan Golf and Country Club, April 25-26 in Lake Mary. We look forward to seeing you there.

Mancheno and Kou Earn Victories

Brandon Mancheno and Xin (Cindy) Kou conquer tough competition at Gainesville Country Club, February 7-8.

After round one, familiar names sat at the top of the leaderboard in the Boys’ division. In first place, Alberto Marinez led with a two under-par, 70. Close behind Martinez, Brandon Mancheno, of Jacksonville, birdied holes 8, 14, and 16 to finish in second place with a score of 71. Thomas Regan scored five birdies in the perfect weather conditions and completed round one with an even par score, in third place. Daniel Core captured fourth place with a score of 73.

Round two narrowed down to a battle between Martinez, Mancheno, and Core for first place. Martinez held onto his one shot lead through hole 14, but fell behind with a bogey on hole 15. Core, of Sorrento, finished hole 15 with a par while Mancheno scored a birdie and the lead. Brandon kept his one shot lead through the finishing holes and sealed his victory with a birdie on hole 18. Mancheno captured first place by two strokes and Martinez tied Core for second place with a tournament total 147. Mancheno has been working his way up to a first place victory in 2015 after finishing third in his first FJT event at Southwood Golf Club and second at his second event at Brooksville Country Club.

Fresh off her inaugural win at Brooksville Country Club, Cindy Kou, in the Girls’ division, led the tournament after both rounds. Kou, of Windermere, shot a first round score of 72 highlighted by birdies on holes 4, 9, and 12. Ramya Meenakshisundaram, of Jacksonville, finished round one in second place, four shots behind Kou, with a score of 76. Ramya fired a second round 79 and finished Sunday in second place with a tournament total 155. Mimi Chen, of Longwood, and Nicole Polivchak, of Sarasota, tied for third place after a tournament total 156. Nicole’s second round score of 74 was the low round on Sunday. Cindy held onto first place after following up her round one even-par score with a score of 81. With this victory, Kou has won the first two 13-15 FJT events of 2015.

The FJT, 13-15 age division, travels to Ocala National Golf Club February 28 – March 1. The competition is gearing up for an exciting year of great golf courses and low scores.
